Sierra Aikido - Wellness Mission
Aikido is an active, but noncombative, noncompetitive martial art.
Our mission is to provide Aikido training as a safe, healthful, enjoyable
exercise alternative to adults, children and teens on the Mid-Peninsula.
Though Aikido training we promote:
- Physical and emotional health for all ages and physical abilities
- Work/life balance for individuals and families
We make Aikido accessible to anyone in the community by:
- Making Aikido training affordable to all through:
- Scholarships, according to need and supported by grants
- Special programs in collaboration with community organizations that serve
underserved and disadvantaged communities
- Adapting the Aikido training to accommodate people:
- From ages 5 to 70+, through safe, smooth low-impact training on a soft surface
- At risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, hypertension
- With physical limitations, such as arthritis, a previous injury, low stamina
- With little or no previous physical training or martial arts experience
We also address common barriers to starting and sustaining an exercise program.
Sierra Aikido training is:
- Motivating: Aikido training has broad appeal, especially to those not motivated
to do sports, gym workouts or strenuous/combative martial arts.
- Easy to start because:
- It's always self-paced, with each building strength and stamina gradually.
- Students get much one-on-one instruction and personal support from their first
day on.
- Easy to sustain through:
- Enjoyment of the art: It's fun, dynamic, paired practice.
- Frequent rewards of learning new skills and working toward realistic milestones
- A sense of community and camaraderie
